AI Startup Domains: Choosing a Name and Extension

Choose the brand first

A name should still make sense if your product evolves. Avoid assuming that adding “AI” automatically improves memorability or relevance.

Compare extensions

Consider how customers interpret .ai versus .com and other extensions, and verify current registration and renewal costs. Registry rules and prices can change.

Check ambiguity

Test how the name sounds aloud and whether users can type it after hearing it once. Inspect likely spelling variants and competing businesses.

Budget for the full lifecycle

Account for acquisition, renewal, branding, and possible migration costs if you later change extensions.

Test the extension in context

A short .ai name can suit a company whose audience already associates that extension with its category. It is not proof that the company uses artificial intelligence, and it will not compensate for an unclear product proposition. Say the full name aloud, put it in an email signature, and ask someone unfamiliar with the business to type it back.

Compare the complete cost

Compare the asking price, renewal fee, and availability of the same wording in .com or another relevant extension. Check whether a similarly named business already operates in your market. If you plan to change extensions later, budget for the migration rather than treating it as free.

Put the advice into practice

  1. Write a naming brief with your audience, budget and non-negotiable requirements.
  2. Compare at least three realistic names against the same criteria, including the full ownership cost.
  3. Ask someone unfamiliar with the names to spell and recall them without prompting.
  4. Confirm the exact live listing, payment terms and transfer arrangements before committing.

A good decision is specific to your business. If a candidate fails an important requirement, reconsider the name rather than stretching the budget or overlooking a foreseeable problem.
